FG Decides on Project Site for Bonny Deep Seaport Construction

The Federal Government has finally announced the location for the proposed Bonny Deep Seaport. The project site is situated in the Bight of Bonny, Nigeria's "Oil Rivers" area. The FG will give a huge boost to the economy of this region, by providing employment opportunities and investment incentives to the oil-producing communities. Construction Project on Bonny Deep Seaport starts soon

The Bonny Deep Seaport

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, said the present administration has agreed to site the port at Bonny, Rivers State. "We have agreed with the Navy to construct the deep seaport in Bonny, because the island will accommodate other things as well. We have agreed that they will be able to attract investments and also serve as the military home base", Amaechi added. "We also agreed to compensate those living around the location with land. These include the Ogonis, Ogale, Aleibe, and Opobo. We will sit down with the communities and will see what to do with the compensation". Bonny, Rivers is an Oil rich region in the southern Nigeria. Its economy depends on the activities at the Bight of Bonny area, and other deep seaports in the Niger Delta.

Location of the Project

The Bight of Bonny is situated along the equator about 18 nautical miles off the eastern coast of Nigeria. It has the longest coastline in the Nigerian waters. Commercial vessels and trawlers enter into Nigerian waters at Bonny to discharge and pick up imported goods, including petrol, crude oil, and natural gas. Nigeria's two international ports at Lagos and Calabar are less than 100 nautical miles away. Bonny is a small town in the Bight of Bonny, the main port town of Nigeria's oil region. It is a commercial port with a population of about 60,000. The proposed Bonny Deep Seaport is about 40 nautical miles from Bonny and close to the airport in Port Harcourt. It is a complex with multiple functions and facilities.

Investment incentives and employment opportunities

The Bight of Bonny region is located in the southern part of Nigeria, and has one of the most prolific oil and gas reserves in Africa. There are oil and gas rigs on the two Bight's major waterways, the Niger Delta and Bonny. However, the infrastructure to support exploration, drilling and production of hydrocarbons on these major waterways has been neglected. The facilities in place are obsolete, and do not meet current regulatory requirements for deep-sea oil and gas operations. These constraints have forced exploration and production companies to shut down operations in the area. With the introduction of the Bonny Deep Seaport, oil and gas companies can safely produce in a safe and compliant environment, while also maximising value for government and other stakeholders.
