Hollywood's Billionaire List Had 6 Celebrities, Now It Only Has 5

The Hollywood Reporter has released its annual list of the 10 richest celebrities, and the rankings have changed quite a bit since last year. The first difference is that the list now only has 10 people on it. The second thing to note is that there are six new entries who make their debut this year. Leonardo DiCaprio, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Dr. Dre, Donald Trump, Ellen DeGeneres and Robert Downey Jr. are all newcomers to the list.

But there is one familiar name who is no longer on the list: George Lucas, the man who invented the modern Star Wars saga, is no longer on the list, and now only makes it as the youngest member on the list at 77 years old. Lucas founded the legendary Lucasfilm company and sold it in 2012 for $4 billion. He's never had to rely on salary, making more than $60 million a year from the Star Wars franchise in the 1970s, but some believe that selling his studio was part of the reason for his failed health. His director friend Steven Spielberg says in his autobiography that they still correspond frequently and that Lucas confided to him in a recent letter that he still makes money from the franchise in installments, but that it is now out of his control.

10 Richest Celebrities, 5 New Entries

Hollywood's rich list has always been a bit of a guessing game, but the numbers above might help narrow down a list of who you should be watching out for in 2018. As the chart shows, the biggest drop off on the list comes from Oprah Winfrey, who has a net worth of $2 billion, which is down by $250 million from 2017.

How Did the Rankings Change?

In last year's list, several movie stars still made the cut, despite having fallen out of favor. Matt Damon, who was number two, had his fortune cut in half, but he was still worth $240 million. Scarlett Johansson, who was listed at number five, fell to number 13 with a $100 million drop in net worth, while Jackie Chan held steady at number eight with $425 million. This year, actors are all over the list, though. The top three spots went to Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, at $276 million, Robert Downey Jr., who has $285 million, and actor Tom Hanks, who has $285 million as well. Rounding out the top ten is Mark Wahlberg, with $260 million, and George Lucas, with $213 million. The loss of six entries did not do much to impact the overall ranking of those who remain.

What's Changed for the Movie Industry?

In terms of the entertainment industry, business from streaming services, the Disney merger and some box office milestones, such as Marvel and DC hitting the century mark in opening weekend grosses and Avengers: Infinity War breaking multiple box office records, have all contributed to a record year for the movie industry. The Hollywood Reporter points out that last year, the 10 wealthiest celebrities on the list made a combined $2.9 billion dollars. This year, the 10 wealthiest celebrities, as well as the companies they run, made $4.9 billion dollars. The Forbes Celebrity 100 List Is No Longer a Complete List The Forbes list has been considered a definitive list of the wealthiest celebrities in the world for the past 24 years.

When it comes down to it, though, the list is really made up of the same exact people. Before you make any assumptions, remember that four of these people are only still in their 20s. Donald Trump is 73 years old, and Dwayne Johnson is 46. Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen DeGeneres are in their 40s. You'd be surprised how fast time flies in Hollywood, and these are only a few of the names we can look forward to seeing at events and on magazine covers in the coming years.
