CBD Oil is a useful hemp extract that, when used correctly, will improve the condition of the body of almost every person! I love medicines that are used in many cases (like emu oil), and for this reason, cannabidiol oil (or CBD, or hemp oil) is gaining popularity. This oil, extracted from the hemp plant, has been subjected to many legal and moral issues. Opinions may differ, but what cannot be ignored is the incredible healing power that CBD oil has and how versatile it is as a supplement and natural remedy.
CBD oil or Hemp oil: what is it and what does it do
CBD Oil claims many benefits that seem to include every conceivable ailment. It's a good idea to look a little deeper when something seems like a panacea... so I dug in. The medical use of marijuana has drawn some attention to the health benefits of hemp-derived products, but it's important to understand how CBD oil is different.
The Endocannabinoid System and Its Significance
The endocannabinoid system is perhaps one of the most interesting systems in the body.
This was discovered by researching the effects of cannabis on the body. In fact, this amazing system that regulates the internal balance of the body takes its name from the cannabis plant that made its discovery possible.
The endocannabinoid system is made up of endocannabinoids and their receptors. They are found throughout the body from the brain and other organs to glands and immune cells. The endocannabinoid system works differently in different parts of the body, but homeostasis (internal balance) is the ultimate goal.
Have you ever heard of "runner's good health"? Research published in Scientific American has shown that endocannabinoids are largely responsible for this natural “hit” of euphoria, which enhances feelings of well-being and reduces the perception of pain.
Cannabidiol (CBD oil) is another way to influence this powerful body system... but am I really saying that "elevating" is a good thing?
It turns out there is still a very important distinction to be made…
Features of cannabidiol oil
There are two different types of CBD products - hemp-based CBD oil (which I'm talking about in this article) and marijuana-based CBD (which is what someone would buy at a dispensary). Both contain CBD and both are derived from the cannabis plant, but hemp and medical marijuana are different varieties of the plant.
Marijuana-based CBD usually contains more THC and other cannabinoids. CBD oil does not contain THC (a compound that causes an "uplifting" sensation). This is an important distinction that many people don't understand.
The variety that is commonly (and legally) used to make CBD oil is hemp. How is hemp oil different? A plant can legally be considered cannabis only if it contains 0.3% per dry unit (or less) of the THC compound.
In a nutshell, CBD oil or hemp oil contains the benefits of the cannabis plant without the potential downsides of the psychoactive compounds that are typically found through inhalation or other methods of consumption.
The benefits of cannabidiol (CBD oil) and its use for pain, praise , epilepsy and other diseases
CBD oil is an excellent remedy for many diseases.
1. Relief from chronic pain
Those suffering from chronic pain from conditions such as fibromyalgia find relief with CBD. Taking CBD can relieve pain and even prevent nervous system degeneration. In fact, it has been approved in Canada for multiple sclerosis and cancer pain.
What's really amazing is that CBD doesn't cause addiction or tolerance, so it's a great choice for those trying to stay away from opioids.
Other means to consider: not in the CBD? Research also shows that turmeric intake and heat therapy (such as sauna use) may also be helpful.
2. Has anti-epileptic properties
CBD has anti-epileptic properties that have been shown to successfully treat drug-resistant children with neurological disorders such as epilepsy (no side effects!). In one study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, CBD reduced seizure frequency by 23 percent more than those who took a placebo.
While I greatly prefer natural remedies as a first course of action, even the Food and Drug Administration seems to agree that hemp-derived medicines have something of value to offer to society. In April 2018, FDA advisors approved the very first cannabis-derived drug that promises to help control seizures.
Other Treatments: Epilepsy in children is a serious condition and it is important to work with a qualified professional who specializes in this area. New research also shows that a ketogenic diet may be very beneficial for drug-resistant epilepsy, especially in children.
3. Reduces anxiety and depression
According to the Russian Anxiety and Depression Association, depression affects 6% and anxiety affects 18% of the Russian population each year. Research shows that CBD oil can help with both.
CBD has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety levels in those suffering from conditions such as PTSD, social anxiety disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
CBD has even reduced the stress and discomfort around public speaking.
While B12 deficiency may be to blame, CBD has been shown to reduce depression by enhancing both serotonergic and glutamate cortical signaling (both are absent in depressed patients).
Other Remedies: Dr. Kelly Brogan provides a lot of helpful information about anxiety and depression in this podcast episode. Vitamin B12 is also linked to mental health and it can be helpful to work with someone who has experience optimizing B12 levels.
4. Fights Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria
Researchers have found that cannabinoids (including CBD) have an unusual ability to kill bacteria (especially drug-resistant strains). More research is needed to find out how and why this works.
A 2011 study showed that CBD could also slow the progression of tuberculosis in rats. The researchers concluded that CBD likely does this by inhibiting T cell proliferation rather than having antibacterial properties.
Whatever the bacteria-killing mechanism, CBD appears to be a powerful weapon against antibiotic-resistant "superpopular insects" that are becoming more and more of a problem today.
Other means to consider: Would you like to try cannabidiol? Research is also being done on the use of garlic, honey, and oregano oil for drug-resistant strains, but working with a medical practitioner experienced in infectious diseases.
5. Reduces Inflammation
According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, chronic inflammation is a huge problem in our society that contributes to many non-communicable diseases, including heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's, autoimmune diseases, and more.
Diet and lifestyle play a huge role in chronic inflammation, but when people are already eating a healthy, nutrient-rich diet and optimizing their lifestyle (such as getting enough sleep and exercise), CBD oil can help. Research also shows that CBD oil can reduce chronic inflammation that leads to disease.
Other remedies to consider: Research agrees that it's important to address gut health in order to manage inflammation. Removing refined sugar from the diet also reduces inflammation in as little as a week.
6. Reduces oxidative stress (high free radicals)
Oxidative stress is the cause of many diseases today. Oxidative stress is when the body has too many free radicals and cannot keep up with their neutralization (antioxidants). This is more of a problem now than in the past because our environment is far more toxic than it once was. A 2010 study shows that CBD oil acts as an antioxidant, and another study found that CBD has neuroprotective properties. Thus, CBD may reduce the neurological damage caused by free radicals.
7. Help with schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a complex and serious illness that is usually treated with therapy and pharmaceutical drugs (which have serious side effects). Ironically, many people have found that CBD oil has helped reduce hallucinations. Research is also beginning to develop in this direction. A March 2015 review of available research concluded that CBD is a safe, effective, and well-tolerated treatment for psychosis. But more research is needed to bring CBD into clinical practice.
It should be noted that THC, the psychoactive substance in marijuana, may actually increase psychosis for those at risk. CBD oil, on the other hand, only helps reduce psychosis and may even counteract marijuana-induced psychosis.
8. Promotes weight loss
Cannabidiol can help maintain healthy blood sugar levels, stimulate genes and proteins that help break down fat, and increase mitochondria that help burn calories.
CBD also encourages the body to convert white fat to brown fat. White fat is the type of fat that is stored as "ugly" subcutaneous fat when we think of body fat. Brown fat is fat that behaves differently in small deposits than white fat. Brown fat is believed to improve health by improving the body's ability to burn white fat, create heat, and even regulate blood sugar levels.
9. Improves heart health
Heart disease is a growing problem today. In fact, it is the leading cause of death in the US. A healthy diet and lifestyle is a top priority for heart health, but CBD oil can also help. According to research, cannabidiol reduces clogged arteries, reduces stress-induced cardiovascular response, and may lower blood pressure. It can also lower cholesterol levels.
As mentioned earlier, CBD oil is helpful in preventing oxidative stress and inflammation. Both are often precursors to heart disease.
10. Improves skin condition
CBD oil can be used topically to treat skin conditions. Research shows that CBD oil has a high potential for treating skin conditions such as eczema by promoting abnormal cell death. It can also help regulate oil production in the skin, reducing acne. CBD also contains many nutrients, such as vitamin E, which help improve and protect the skin.
Other Treatments: Diet is vital to skin health. Many people find that removing foods like sugar, dairy, or grains (if they are sensitive) improves skin. I also personally use a probiotic skin spray which has made a huge difference in my acne prone skin.
11. Fights cancer
The role of CBD oil in cancer treatment still needs more research, but what is available looks promising. According to the American Cancer Society, CBD oil may slow the growth and spread of certain cancers (in animals). Since it fights oxidative stress and inflammation (and both have been linked to cancer), it makes sense that CBD oil could help fight cancer cells.
CBD oil or hemp oil
This is a common question and misconception. As mentioned above, although they come from the same plant, they are different strains and are harvested from plants that do not contain THC (or negligible levels). CBD is completely legal and is not considered a drug. Due to the often confused history of these plants, many growers use "hemp oil" instead of the more controversial "CBD" in their marketing. CBD levels can vary greatly between manufacturers, so it's important to find a high quality manufacturer with verified levels.
From a sustainability standpoint, it's not entirely good that hemp has received so much negative pressure because it comes from a similar plant variety. Aside from the benefits of CBD, hemp is one of the strongest, longest and most durable natural fibers and can be grown without any pesticides or herbicides! It's the same:
- four times more fiber per acre than pines
- can be recycled much more than pine-based pulp products
- easy to grow without chemicals and good for the soil
- produces seeds and seed oil rich in protein, essential fatty acids and amino acids
How to use CBD oil
CBD oil is most often used internally (when swallowed). Because CBD oil is a relatively new supplement, exact dosing has not been established with certainty. While longer studies are needed, there is no established "overdose" of CBD, and there are very few side effects at any dosage.
When trying to find the right dosage, consider the following things:
- Start by buying high quality oil from a reputable company. A higher quality oil will be more bioavailable, so a lower dose may be sufficient.
- Start with the recommended dosage on the bottle (especially when used prophylactically).
- Some notice changes right away, while others don't notice any improvement for several weeks. If there is still no change after a few weeks, increase the dosage.
- As with most herbal supplements, a small dose 3-4 times a day is usually more therapeutic than one large dose.
Important note: While CBD oil is very safe on its own, it can interact with medications, especially opioids. Talk to your doctor if you're worried about an interaction or unsure about using hemp oil for your conditions. I know it's hard to find a primary care doctor who understands alternative methods, but there are options like this service that pairs you with a doctor that fits your lifestyle.
CBD Oil for Pets
Note to our pets: All mammals have an endocannabinoid system, CBD oil may have some of the same benefits for pets as it does for humans.
For cats and dogs in particular, CBD oil can help with:
- excessive barking or crying
- pets don't get along well with other pets
- relax pets before going to the vet
- lack of appetite
How to Use CBD Oil for Pets
There may be some trial and error in finding the right dosage for pets. Start at a low dose of 1 milligram per 4.5 kg of body weight and increase to 5 milligrams per 4.5 kg of body weight if needed. Some conditions may require a higher dose. A low dose 3-4 times a day is usually more therapeutic than a single large dose.
CBD: what I have tried
There are many benefits of using CBD oil as a supplement. A healthy diet and lifestyle should always be the first step towards better health, but CBD oil can help with that.
- I have already tried CBD oil supplements and noticed a calming effect almost immediately. Because I have the MAO-A gene and am very Type A, I have always struggled with sleep and forced my brain to shut down. I have found CBD oil to be very helpful for this. I have also used it to reduce inflammation after injuries with good results.
- I don't use CBD oil all the time, but I keep it away from injury or nights when it's hard to sleep. It is important to use pure CBD oil from a reputable company. Personally, I love this brand.
- One of the ways I regularly benefit from CBD is a teaspoon of this hemp "honey" in my nightly tea. It helps me calm down and fall asleep (and it's not just my imagination... it has a whopping 20 milligrams of hemp oil and its relaxing effects in one teaspoon).
- These hemp sticks from the same company are great for travel and travel.
